Workplaces that understand women's wellbeing work better
From hormonal health to mental resilience, when employers understand and support the unique needs of their female workforce, everyone benefits. Investing in women’s wellbeing isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a smart business move that drives productivity, retention, and workplace culture
Healthy women build healthy businesses

Understanding the women in your team matters
Women’s hormonal health impacts colleagues both directly and indirectly, and the wider organisation. Managers need to understand women’s hormonal changes including menopause and how they can support their staff. They should also be aware of the indirect effects of hormonal changes during pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause on people such as spouses/significant others and family members and friends of individuals experiencing hormonal challenges. This can put additional pressure on relationships, so it’s important that managers understand the situation and have the skills and knowledge to signpost to appropriate support channels.
If your business employs neurodiverse women, such as those with autism or ADHD, it’s crucial to understand how hormonal fluctuations and menopause can intensify their challenges. Many symptoms of hormonal changes mimic or worsen traits associated with neurodiversity, such as difficulties with focus, memory, and sensory sensitivity. Without proper support, this can impact productivity, well-being and retention. By recognising these unique needs and providing tailored support, businesses can foster a more inclusive, supportive, and high-performing workplace.
Supporting women boosts workplace performance
Women make up a significant portion of the workforce, and hormonal changes can have a profound impact on their focus, energy, mental health and productivity. So supporting the women in your business is a crucial investment; it reduces absenteeism and presenteeism (being at work but underperforming due to symptoms). Your female team members feel supported, less isolated and better able to manage their health at work. And there’s more:
Inclusivity – when businesses openly recognise and accommodate women’s hormonal needs, they promote a culture of empathy, equity and psychological safety. This improves staff retention and supports diversity and inclusion strategies. The women in your organisation feel valued, understood and more likely to remain loyal to the organisation.
Enhanced mental wellbeing – because hormonal changes can trigger anxiety, depression or burnout, especially during perimenopause, postpartum periods, or conditions like PMDD or PCOS, providing support can prevent small issues from becoming crises. This will likely reduce mental health-related absence and lessen pressure on occupational health services. Women are more likely to seek early help and remain mentally well and engaged at work.
Supported career progression – many women reduce their hours, change roles or leave jobs altogether due to unmanaged hormonal symptoms, particularly during menopause. By being supportive, you may retain experienced, talented women who might otherwise leave the workforce. Importantly, women can progress in their careers without feeling they must choose between work and health.
Enhanced organisational reputation – being proactive around women’s health signals that your organisation is progressive, caring and forward-thinking. You’ll likely attract top talent, especially women, and your reputation as an employer is enhanced. The team members will feel greater pride and connection to their workplace.
It’s a low-cost, high-impact change – overall, improving awareness and support around women’s hormonal health doesn’t need to be expensive, often it’s about creating space for conversation, offering flexibility and training managers. A minimal investment can deliver significant returns in loyalty, performance and wellbeing. And for the female workers, even small adjustments (flexible hours, temperature control, rest breaks) can make a huge difference.

Why it's important
Research by The Fawcett Society highlights that one in ten women who have been employed during menopause have left work due to menopause symptoms. Menopause usually starts in the mid to late forties, although it often begins earlier, and women can experience an average of four years of perimenopause before their periods stop completely.
One in four women with menopause symptoms are worried about their ability to cope with life. Symptoms can last months or years and can change over time. They can range from cognitive, physical and psychological symptoms, for example hot flushes, muscular aches, poor concentration, anxiety and headaches.
A survey from ACAS found that a third of employers (33 per cent) do not feel well-equipped to support women going through menopause. Women over 50 are reported to be the fastest-growing workforce demographic in the UK. Employers should therefore be looking at their wellbeing offer and critically evaluating the experience of staff through all stages of their careers. A positive staff experience and a rounded support offer are vital to encouraging staff to remain in the workplace.
