Safe use of transdermal HRT – what you need to know

Safe use of transdermal HRT is something I’m very concerned about, and I’m doing all I can to spread the word about this important subject for women as well as their loved ones. I’ve written to all the key organisations in the field asking for their support with spreading the word and raising awareness.

We all know that hormones are powerful. One such example, transdermal HRT (oestrogen or testosterone gels/creams), can be positively life-changing for the person taking them but can sometimes unintentionally transfer to others via skin contact. This can have serious consequences.

Because of the ease with which the hormone can be transferred, those most at risk are children (especially with repeated skin contact), pets (even spayed animals), and partners who can often be affected via close skin contact.

Warnings on packaging are minimal. Safety advice is inconsistent, and awareness is low. It’s time for a consistent message from prescribers, pharmacists, and manufacturers.

Some distressing true examples of issues with transdermal HRT, two of which are personally known to me and two I’ve referenced are:

·       A Mum who allowed her 6-year-old to rub in her gel without knowing the risk

·       A 17-year-old developed gynaecomastia requiring surgery; later linked to his mum’s HRT, despite careful application and handwashing

·       Pets “going into heat” despite being spayed (BBC News, Oct 2023)

·       A Brighton toddler  Toddler Showed Symptoms of Puberty After Exposure to Testosterone Gel – Business Insider

Three further cases (all UK) are listed here: Endocrine Abstracts 2024

According to experts: “These cases highlight physical changes but also a psychological effect on the child and parents… Prescribers have a responsibility to highlight risk and mitigation measures.”

You can protect your Loved Ones by:

·       Applying gel to areas that can be covered with clothing

·       Allowing 20+ minutes drying time before contact

·       Washing hands thoroughly after applying

·       Avoiding skin contact with children and pets around application sites

·       Storing gels/creams safely out of reach

This is not about criticising HRT, I’m pro-HRT. It’s about making sure we have the whole picture. Because none of us would knowingly put our children or pets at risk.

Transdermal HRT can be life-changing — and safe — when we’re aware of the risks and take simple precautions. Sharing this knowledge could protect children, pets, and partners from accidental exposure.

If you or someone you love uses transdermal HRT, take a moment to review your routine and pass this information on. Awareness saves harm before it happens.

Have you encountered this risk or taken steps to prevent it? I’d love to hear your experiences — together, we can make sure everyone benefits from HRT safe
